Brother Printer Mfc 6490cw

Follow the steps below to resolve this issue:

STEP A: Verify the Brother machine is powered on and there are no errors

  1. If your Brother machine's screen (hereinafter called LCD) is blank, the machine may not be powered on. Check the machine to see if it wakes from sleep mode.
If it does not, then make sure it is plugged into a working socket and any power switches are turned ON.
NOTE: If you are unable to power on the machine, then this solution does not apply. Go to Troubleshoot this hardware issue.
  2. Check the LCD for any error messages. An example would be 'Paper Jam' or 'Ink/Toner Empty'. If the LCD shows an error, troubleshoot the error to clear the issue indicated.

STEP B: Make sure the printer is connected to the computer

  • If using a USB cable, make sure the cable is connected to both the printer and computer.
Try connecting it directly to the computer and not via a hub.
  • If using an ethernet cable, make sure the cable is connected to both the printer and router/access point.
Print the network configuration page to check the IP address.
  • If using a wireless connection, print the network configuration page to check the IP address.

If the issue continues, go to STEP C.

> STEP C (Windows): Make sure your Brother machine is set as the default printer
> STEP C (macOS): Make sure you are using the correct Printer Driver for the Brother machine

STEP C (Windows): Make sure your Brother machine is set as the default printer

Open the printer folder and make sure there is a check mark on your Brother machine's icon:

(Windows 8 or later)
  1. Open the Control Panel. (Click here to see how to open the Control Panel.)
  2. Click Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
(Windows 7)

Click Start > Devices and Printers.

If the check mark is not on your Brother machine, right-click the icon for your Brother machine and select Set as default printer.

STEP D (Windows): Delete all printer jobs from the Devices and Printers window

(Windows 7 or later)

Right-click the icon for your Brother machine > See what's printing > Printer > Cancel All Documents.

If Cancel All Documents is gray out like below, click Open As Administrator. Enter the password for an administrator and click Yes.

STEP E (Windows): Check the printer status in the Devices and Printers window

If the printer status is Offline

(Windows 7 or later)

Right-click the icon for your Brother machine > See what's printing > Printer > Use Printer Offline (removes the checkmark).

If Use Printer Offline is gray out, click Open As Administrator. Enter your administrator password, and then click Yes.

If the printer status is Paused

(Windows 7 or later)

Right-click the icon for your Brother machine > See what's printing > Printer > Pause Printing (removes the checkmark).

If Pause Printing is gray out, click Open As Administrator. Enter the password for an administrator and click Yes.

STEP F (Windows): If a copy of your Brother machine's icon (For example: Brother XXX-XXXX (Copy 1)) is listed in the Devices and Printers

A copy of your printer with the same printer name may be created if you:

  • Changed the USB port on your computer which is connected to the Brother machine.
  • Installed the same printer driver multiple times.

This may lead to some copies of your printer driver not working correctly. To print, select a printer driver that you know is working.

To check which printer driver is working, do the following:

  1. Turn the Brother machine on. If any other machines are connected, only turn the Brother machine on that you want to use.
  2. Open the printer folder:
    (Windows 8 or later)
Open the Control Panel. (Click here to see how to open the Control Panel.)
Click Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
    (Windows 7)
Click Start > Device and Printers.
  3. Hover the cursor over the printer icon until the printer status pop-up appears.
If the status is Ready, it means the printer driver is working correctly. Select this printer driver when printing.

(Optional) To change the printer name, do the following:

    (Windows 7 or later)

    1. Right-click the printer icon.
    2. Click Printer Properties.
    3. Change the printer name in the Printer Properties window, and click OK.
  4. If you always want to print using this printer, right-click the icon of the machine and select Set as default printer. The check mark will appear on the machine's icon and when you next print, this printer driver will be selected automatically.

A. Checking for debris or paper scraps

NOTE: The images shown below are from the representative product. Your model may look different from the picture.

  1. Disconnect the machine from the power Outlet.
  2. Lift the scanner cover using the plastic tabs or finger holds, located on the left and right side of the machine until it locks securely into the open position.

DO NOT touch the encoder strip. The encoder strip is a clear plastic strip in front of the white vinyl band (surrounded in red shown in the picture below). If the encoder gets markings or debris on its surface, it may cause other problems.

  3. Look inside the machine for jammed paper or foreign objects and remove. The paper may be jammed under the print head. If the print head is in the middle, use your fingers to slide the print head to right or left side and check for paper scraps underneath the print head.
    - If the print head is on the left side, go to the steps of 'If the print head is on the left side'.

    - If the print head is on the right side, go to the steps of 'If the print head is on the right side'.

Be careful not to trap your fingers under the scanner cover. Always use the finger holds provided on both sides of the scanner cover when opening and closing it.

If the error message continues, or if no debris was found, the encoder strip will need to be cleaned.
Go to step B to clean the encoder strip.

[If the print head is on the right side (The print head is hidden at the right corner)]
(The picture shown below is an example when the print head is hidden at the right corner.)

Brother Mfc 6490cw Troubleshooting

Markings and debris can adhere on the surface of the encoder strip from the reasons listed below

  • Touching the encoder strip with your hands can place smudge marks on the encoder strip.
  • The removal of jammed paper can cause grease to get applied to the surface of the encoder strip.

To solve this problem clean the encoder strip following the steps listed below:

DO NOT use flammable substances or any type of spray to clean the inside or outside of the machine.
Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock.

  1. Disconnect the machine from the power outlet.
  2. Lift the scanner cover using the plastic tabs or finger holds, located on the left and right side of the machine until it locks securely into the open position.
  3. Locate the Encoder Strip.
The encoder strip is a clear plastic strip in front of the white vinyl band.
(surrounded in red shown in the picture below)

  4. Clean both sides of the encoder strip with a dry lint free cloth.
    • Do NOT use any type of paper products. Use only a dry lint free cloth.
    • The encoder strip will have some slack to allow you to move around slightly to assist with cleaning.
    • Do NOT pull on the strip with force. Too much force may damage the machine.
    • Do not touch encoder strip with bare hands.
    • Do NOT scrub hard the encoder strip. Doing this may cause scratches on its surface.

  5. Clean encoder strip from right to left. Make sure to stop just before the left corner.
  6. Clean encoder strip from left to right. Make sure to stop just before the right corner.

  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 2 or 3 times to clean thoroughly.
